The kitchen where everyone ends up
Some kitchens are designed to be admired from the doorway. This one is designed for someone to arrive with a bottle in hand, leave a coat on a chair and stay longer than planned. Bold Gatherings, by Justine Keyworth of Kitchen Studio Christchurch North, has the ease of a room that expects company — and knows exactly how to look after it.
The renovation began with a difficult existing space: full-height windows, an awkward arrangement and plenty of reasons to simply work around the problem. Instead, the kitchen was relocated and reorganised. The result feels remarkably natural, with the windows now part of the composition and the cabinetry moving around them with calm assurance.
Warm white satin cabinetry gives the room its light. Aged walnut oak brings in the shadow: across the rangehood, shelving and selected joinery, it lends the kitchen the depth of a very good piece of furniture. The pairing could have been familiar. Here, the proportions and restraint make it feel fresh.
There are quiet moments of occasion everywhere. Stone carries a soft, almost clouded movement across the bench and splashback. Antique brass catches through the handles and woven-glass display panels, with the mixer continuing the note at the sink. None of it is too precious. It is simply the pleasure of a room where even the practical things have been considered.
That practicality is serious. Integrated refrigeration and dishwashing, a capable scullery and thoughtfully concealed storage mean the main space can remain welcoming when the real work of cooking is underway. The bar, kitchen and scullery are each given a clear role, yet they belong to the same conversation.
For a first-time awards entrant, it is an unusually composed debut. But perhaps that is what makes Bold Gatherings so convincing: it never performs confidence. It earns it through the way the ceiling detail, cabinetry, light and circulation have all been allowed to do their jobs.
The kitchen has presence, certainly. More importantly, it has generosity. It is a place made for the familiar choreography of home — the cooking, the pouring, the leaning on the bench, the last person still talking after everyone else has gone to bed.
