Project story
The State House Revival proves that a generous kitchen does not need a generous footprint. The project sits within a 1937 Art Deco state house on Auckland’s North Shore, where an empty-nester couple wanted a fresh, compact home that still felt complete.
At just 6.37 square metres, the kitchen had to work around fixed windows, uneven sill heights and a load-bearing beam. Careful planning, material choices, appliances and lighting bring order to the tight dimensions. It is a small room with a clear point of view: practical, bright and comfortably suited to its next chapter.
Judges’ comment
A fresh, bright response to a compact and challenging heritage space. The open connection between kitchen, dining and living has been cleverly improved, with a downdraft cooktop preserving sightlines. Generous vertical storage, considered finishes and well-resolved detailing create a practical, charming design that looks beautiful and fits the home perfectly.
