A neglected passage between the entry, bedrooms and living space became a small gin bar with an unexpectedly large outlook. The owners wanted a quiet place for a drink, a game or a good book, while preserving the remarkable water views held by two walls of glazing.
The bar sits within an existing alcove and can be concealed when the room needs to return to its role as a thoroughfare. Warmth, texture and a stronger connection to the coast replace the earlier black-and-white direction. What was once leftover circulation now has a reason to pause.
Judges’ comment
Warm, inviting and beautifully integrated into the home, this bar has transformed an underutilised space into a restful retreat with a stunning outlook. The acoustic panelling, vertical slats and pocket doors combine function with elegance, maintaining cohesion, while allowing the bar to be concealed when needed. A lovely space.
