Project story
Built for a holiday home that may host more than 20 guests at a time, Dune Lodge balances architectural restraint, serious entertaining and the quiet muscle of a very hard-working kitchen.
It was never going to be a modest kitchen. Set within a new-build holiday home in the sand dunes, the brief called for modern conservative luxury, island seating for six, a dedicated bar, a functional scullery and a strong indoor-outdoor connection to the beach.
It also needed to cope with scale. The owners are an overseas couple using the home as a lifestyle retreat, with friends and extended family regularly in the mix. At full stretch, the house may hold more than 20 guests.
Adam Spitz was involved from the initial architectural concept stage through to completion, working across spatial planning, cabinetry, materials, documentation and coordination. That early involvement matters. It allows the kitchen to feel embedded in the architecture rather than inserted after the fact.
The main island is the centrepiece: fully clad in Invisible Grey marble selected by the client and imported from Italy. It has the monolithic presence needed for the home’s large-format cladding, glass and lodge-like architectural language, but the stone’s movement keeps it from feeling severe.
Dark-stained Toitu veneer cabinetry warms the drama, picking up the cedar plank ceiling and wall linings used throughout the home. The detailing is deliberately restrained. There is no need to overwork a room already carrying stone, timber, view and volume.
Behind the calm front is the machinery of hosting: a concealed scullery for prep and cleaning, high-performance appliances, considered storage and premium hardware systems that support everyday use as well as large gatherings.
Dune Lodge is luxurious, but not showy. Its confidence comes from restraint, proportion and a clear understanding of what holiday living actually asks of a kitchen: beauty, durability, connection and the ability to disappear the mess.
Judges’ comment
The manufacturer has executed a technically demanding project to an exceptional standard, with the extensive stone detailing and fully stone-clad island delivered with outstanding precision. Careful coordination of the structural support, sequencing, and cedar scriber installation has resulted in a refined, highly accurate outcome that remains faithful to the design intent.
