Project story

The Wash House takes an overworked laundry and gives it the planning of a proper room. As the route between the garage and the home, it needed to be durable, orderly and pleasant to pass through, while also handling the regular weight of family washing, linen and cleaning supplies.

An underused office was brought into the footprint to create a more generous galley layout. Concealed laundry storage, a butler’s sink, folded-washing zones and stacked appliances make the work easier, while traditional cues and contemporary detailing keep the room from feeling back-of-house. It is utility made useful, and then made beautiful.

Judges’ comment

The unexpected juxtaposition of the contemporary sharknose benchtop edge with a traditional butler sink brings distinct character to this beautifully refined laundry. The detailing is especially strong, with features like the brass rail bringing a high level of finish to a practical laundry. An excellent response to the brief.
